    Take a step back - simplify the problem by analysing an unforced CHIMNEY COLLAPSE, NUMERICAL EXPERIMENT (after such laboratory studies as Saunders, 1971). Determine time-scales for restratification as a function of chimney depth h, radius r, ambient stratification N and Coriolis f (see Fig. 1, delta, the width of the baroclinic zone scales with the Rossby radius Nh/f).
